Maths

We teach Maths using a scheme called Maths No-Problem. The scheme is based upon Singapore Maths and is approved by the Department of Education. Children are given the opportunity to explore concepts using a range of manipulatives. This helps to secure their conceptual understanding before moving on to more formal written methods. We actively encourage pupils to demonstrate their understanding in four key ways: with manipulatives, by creating a picture, explaining their methods to others and applying their knowledge in a variety of increasingly challenging ways. Reasoning is a key part of our everyday learning in maths.

At Jewell Academy we also use TT Rock Stars, which helps develop children’s rapid recall of Times Tables and the related division facts. Children participate in this from Year 2 onwards, starting with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2, then gradually mastering more of their times tables to increase speed and fluency by the end of their primary education. Booster clubs/lessons take place to support children with their learning. We are also focusing on making sure we are providing lots of challenge for the children working at Greater Depth for their year group.

Our aspiration is for all children to love maths as much as we do! We believe children should have the confidence to tackle challenging problems and realise that sometimes we might not always get the answer straight away. The most satisfying problem solving takes place when we have to overcome a few obstacles on the way.
