Important information for parents

On 1 September 2013 a law came into effect which does not allow parents to take their children out of school for holidays in term time. Any request for absence during term time must be due to exceptional circumstances. A Leave of Absence Request form must be completed prior to the absence. Unauthorised term time holidays will be referred to the Local Authority requesting for a Fixed Penalty Notice to be issued.

Absence from School

At Jewell Academy Bournemouth we want all our pupils to achieve success and regular school attendance is recognised as key to good student outcomes.

  • If your child's attendance drops below 95% then the school will be in contact with you and our Educational Social Worker may become involved.
  • If your child's attendance is below 90% they will be classed as a Persistent Absentee.
  • If your child's attendance falls below 95% and does not improve you may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice or legal action, which could result in a fine of up to £1,000 or a Conditional Discharge.

First Day Call

If your child is absent from school you must telephone 01202 774830 and leave a message on the absence line before 9.30am

Failure to report an absence by 9.30am will result in an unauthorised absence being recorded in the register and the school will contact you for a reason/explanation for your child's absence.

What can you do to help?

  • Make sure that your child arrives by 8.45 am.
  • Take your holiday in the 13 weeks of official school holidays.
  • Do not let your child have ‘just one day’ off school. These can quickly add up.
  • If there is a problem that is causing your child to ask for time off, contact the school so that we can help sort out the problem.
  • All routine and non-emergency dental / doctor's appointments must be made out of school hours.

What is meant by 'Unauthorised Absence'?

  • When you have not left a message on the absence line before 9.30am.
  • When no explanation for an absence is given.
  • When the explanation given is not thought to be acceptable (for example; parent/sibling ill or car broke down).
  • When your child has been absent from school for 4 days or more and medical evidence has not been provided to support this.

By working together we aim to improve everyone's attendance and achievement

If your child is unable to come to school for any reason please notify us by 9.30 am on the day of the absence by written note, email or a telephone call:

Please do not send verbal messages with other children as these cannot be accepted.

If we do not hear from you by 9.30 am we will telephone you.
